Tips From The Bar

Almost every week, I give a prompt for poets.
Many of the  2011/2012 blog post titles are from the brain of Simone Beaubien.

Man, Will Smith was right, parents just don't understand. But grandparents do, right? So write a poem where your grandmother explains the person you've become to your mother.

Some People Do This All The Time But Don't Know

When the sun
kissed the blades of
grass to
signal the
arrival of promise

I roused my
carcass from the
overstarched sheets and
stretched toward the
furthest planet in a
distant solar system

The slick
tundra of the kitchen was
a trudge

The switch that
shed artificial light into
my chamber of solitude
eluded my exhausted arms

Once the switch was
Columbused I
wriggled my fingers until
the branches of my arms
were
properly bloomed for the task of
whisking my canines into
a fine polish.

What a longwinded way to say "I got up this morning and brushed my teeth", right? This week overwrite a thoroughly mundane activity in the most "poetic" wasy possible, if the word "poetic" was slang for "exhausting".

What are you passionate about? Not poetry, ugh. Do you collect Golden Girls VHS tapes? The jerseys of disgraced football players? Have you seen every episode of every season of Survivor? You love your passion, clearly, that's part of the definition of passion. But what if...What if your passion doesn't love you back?

Write a letter in the voice of your favorite movie, sport, pasttime, Magic The Gathering deck explaining why you are unworthy of their love.

Poem are often a journey strting from an unexpected place, and bringing you to an even less expected destination. With that in mind, start a poem from the lines "It was a beautiful day and nothing was wrong"
