Tips From The Bar

Almost every week from 2010-2020 I give a prompt for poets at a bar that didn't survive the Covid pandemic.
Many of the  2011/2012 blog post titles are from the brain of Simone Beaubien.
From 2020-2023 I gave occasional prompts as part of The Saturday Night Poetry Exchange.
Though I am no longer behind the bar at a poetry reading, I'll try and make a prompt a day in 2024.

I Never Had To Listen To Someone Speak Loudly On Their Cell Phone Ever Again

Unsubscribing from newsletters is such a freeing experience. Imagine a world where you could unsubscribe to anything. Don't want to hear Christmas music ever again? Check a box. Tired of getting drunk dials from your jerk of a brother at 3 AM? Click a button. What a beautiful existence.

Write about something that you would like to be unsubscribed from that, sadly, it just isn't possible to do.

Do you have a catchphrase? Is it something you, personally came up with, or is it something you overheard, appropriated, as is now wrongly associated with you.

Or maybe you had a friend in middle school who rocked a scarf hard, all year round. And then you moved to a new city where nobody new about your friend, and suddenly you became Scarf Man. Did you ever have to explain that Original Recipe Scarf Man?

Sometimes, no matter how many facts you've acquired, no matter that yours is the more commonly held belief, you lose an argument before you've even started.

Write about a time when you discovered you were in an unwinnable argument. Try not to make it about mortality.

Vtudian Lunar Breath Myths

11/4/2015

In the ancient religion of Vtudian, which I, possibly, completely made up, the reason given for night and day is simple. The sun and the moon are an old married couple. Like most corporeal beings, when they first fell in love, they shared a bed, and spent a great deal of time together. So, while there were occasional moments of night time where you couldn't see the sun, and a few moments of day time, when you couldn't see the moon, often they'd share the sky in a perpetual duskish.

But as he got older (because despite what Marge Piercy tells you, the moon isn't Always Female in myths that I may be lying about existing), the moon developed a wicked case of morning breath, and the sun drifted away from him. Oh, sure, sometimes you can see the moon when the sun is coming up or down, but they tend to sleep alone and keep mostly to themselves.

Can you come up with a cure for the moon's perpetual morning breath? Or find some other way to get these two back together?
