Patron, Amity Gann, asked me to put together a list of Black Poets I think people should be reading. Instead, of put together a list of Black Poets I think should be taught in schools. Not just in courses about African American Literature, but in all poetry courses.
I've been going through my bookshelves from back to front, and I'll be going fairly in-depth for at least twenty, probably closer to forty or fifty poets whose work I love, and who are Black.
I think a lot of my friends have become more conscious of this idea because of some Scott Woods quotes that have been floating around Facebook and Twitter recently, so I'm excited that, due to the alphabetical placement of his last name, he shows up in this first collection. This list is a bit dude heavy, but I believe the next section is almost exclusively women. I'm reasonably certain by the end of this project that there will be more women and non-binary authors than cis-males.
Hope everyone enjoys this, and then goes out and buys the books that they don't already own.
There is no cover yet because I don't plan on ever making this something to sell or really advertise. I will probably use all this writing in some form or another but I don't feel comfortable promoting myself as an expert on Black poetry. I'm not. I think I'm an expert on poetry, and some of the most exciting writers of poetry right now are Black. So there will be no actual book that corresponds to the booklets that I'm sending out to Patrons.
