In line at the CVS, the teller I’m most friendly with says hello to a customer. The customer puts down a bag, and she asks “What’s in here?”
The customer says “Cupcakes.”
The teller says “Oh, I love that cupcake place.”
"Me, too." The customer says. "My friend is having a bad day, so I thought I would get some cupcakes."
"Oh, that’s so sweet. You’re a good friend."
The customer angles his head. “I am?”
"Hell, yeah. If I was having a bad day, and my friend brought me cupcakes, I’d be psyched."
"Oh." The customer says. "I didn’t get them for my friend. They’re for me. I am trying and balance the universe by having The Best Day Ever."
The teller shoots him an odd look, laughs, and hands the customer his change.
I laugh at the exchange and head back to my store.
The cupcakes are delicious.
