In the least surprising regionals slam to date, Lizard Lounge schooled Worcester & The Cantab.
Everyone brought pretty much what I expected. That's not at all a bad thing. I got to hear myroommates slam for the first time in ages, the brilliance of Worcester's group pieces, amd how far The Cantab has come in the past two weeks. I even got to perform in the 2 minute round, where mstegosaurus in a bunny suit, and Iyeoka pounded the shit out of my obviously rusty "Target Practie.' Any night where I get to see Michael Brown judge a slam in lieu of having to see Maya Angelou address a crowd at the DNC is a great night. Oh, yea, and Sekou the Misfit was in the house. For the first time, I really enjoyed his work. No cheap slam lines, no craptastic sloganeering, just a funny-ass concept about trying to be hateful and angry but being constantly interrupted by the happiness his girlfriend, who he's supposed to be mad at, brings him. Easily the best poem in the open mic. Maybe getting time off from the slam is the best way for "slam poets" to improve. Apart from special events like The Queer Slam, J*Me has been distancing himself from the slam. I've always considered him one of the better writers in the Boston scene, but in the past three or four months he's gone from really good to fucken amazing. For two years, I watched him perform the same six poems ad nauseum. I don't think I've seen him perform the same poem twice since I moved back from AZ. And I've seen him feature twice, and open mic fairly frequently. And each new poem I hear is lightyears better than his slam stuff.
