My Parents Got Drunk But Rarely Beat Me

Last night at the WAG was a blast, though I wish I'd gotten the opportunity to see Daily Mouse this week. The crowd was intimate, but not fall 2003 Mesa intimate. I recognized a number of people from last week's iWPS slam at The Java Hut. The open mic was high quality: Raphael, Tony Brown, The Voice, Bill (damnit I always forget his last name), and Larry (Raphael's dad).

I ended up doing about a half-hour set:

Fuck/Insomnia
Waiting for the Fall
Last of the Mohegans/Raindrops (by Oz)
What Hookers Make
Unsent Letter to the CEO of Hooters/Deconstructing Freedom
Truth is a Revolution
MapQuest Directions to the Objects in this Poem
Poets Who Write Sequels to their Most Popular Poems Are Untalented Hacks (Part 4)
and When Bad Sodomy Happens to Good People (just to poke fun at myself for having written a piece that falls into the Hacks poem category).

Well-received, well-paid, I highly reccomend featuring there. I mean, it's hosted by Alex Charlambides, how could you go wrong?

The slam was fun. It was fall 2003 Mesa intimate. Two slammers. Raphael and Nick. Nick is a very talented young performer. Raphael is a fucken genius. He had just finished writing his first poem before the slam and it was better than about 9/10ths of the poems I've heard in the last year. His second poem was about all the different writers living in his head. He's androidlustre good. The kind of kid you dread slamming against, because you know that if they're on, they're going to kick your ass.

My favorite quote of the night was when, during a discussion about what it takes to be a poet between Raphael, radioactiveart and myself, Raphael turns to his dad and cries "Why didn't you ever come home drunk and beat me? Now I'll never be a famous writer."

Post-slam, Alex and I headed to the Java Hut, had some great food made by cheesy_goodness and talked about...well...everything.

It was a great night. Tonight I shall have my fun serving Bloomin' Onions. Wait, that's not fun at all.

akamuu: D*OhI feel awful about repeatedly forgetting Dave Gibbs name. I think the reason is that I had a friend in grade school named Dave Gibbs, and he is completely unworthy of sharing the name with the poet. Dave has to be the most sincere, self-aware poet in Western, MA. And The Voice. Well, he's The Voice.

Glad you enjoyed the feature. I'm calling around now to finalize plans for the NYC trip.

akamuuAny chance you're having a show somewhere in the area when I'm not also having a show somewhere in the area? I've seen you just about as frequently as when I was in Arizona. ;)

akamuu: Re: Mesa intimateGlad to hear Essneza is doing well. You'll note that I specified Fall 2003 Mesa Intimate. Winter 2003 Mesa, at least when mstegosaurus & I were in town was pretty crowded. I hope for Anthology's sake that Winter 2004 is at least as busy.
