Yesterday wins for most memorable day of 2004. Hadn't slept at all on Friday, what with getting home around 2 AM, and having to take the T to Middleboro around 6 AM. As I waited at JFK for The Commuter Rail, I rewrote "Your Body Sulfur Potential" into something I like again. The last few revisions made me wish I hadn't written it at all.
I met up with my mother and her boyfriend, Ken, around 9 AM. We took a tour of the estate the family owned when the pre-Baby Boomer generation was rich. It's now a boarding school run by Harvard. It still looks like it does in the old pictures.
We got to the gravesite at 10:00. The services were to begin at 11. My grandfather and grandmother's namestone (not the family headstone, but the individual marker) was not there. Nor was the hole dug for my grandfather's ashes. So Ken and I got out the tiny shovels that my mother and her brother were supposed to use to pour dirt over the ashes, to dig my grandfather's grave. Meanwhile, my mother called and screamed hysterically at the putz who ran the cemetary. There are certain things in life you just don't fuck up.
He did a drive-by namestoning around 10:20, barely stepping out of the car, for fear my mother was going to kill him. This was a justified fear. Ken and I weren't too pleased at the prospect of digging another hole, so we let him go.
